What exactly is Korean international age (만 나이)?
International age counts a person as 0 at birth and adds one year on each birthday, the same system used in most of the world. Since June 28, 2023, Article 7-2 of Korea's Administrative Basic Act made this the default standard for all laws, contracts, and administrative documents unless a different age standard is explicitly stated.
Why do you also show year age and counting age?
Some Korean laws — such as the Military Service Act and the Youth Protection Act — still use 'year age' (연 나이), which is simply the current year minus the birth year, regardless of whether the birthday has passed. 'Counting age' (세는 나이) is the traditional method that counts a newborn as already age 1; it has had no legal effect since June 28, 2023, but is shown here for reference.
Can I enter a future date as the reference date?
Yes. Entering a future reference date lets you check what someone's international age will be on that date — useful for checking age requirements for an exam or eligibility deadline in advance.
Could the result differ from someone's official legal age?
For standard international age, this calculator's result is accurate. However, some specific laws or programs may explicitly require year age or counting age instead, so please also check the relevant authority's guidance for important legal or administrative decisions.
