Installment Payment Calculator FAQ
What should I enter for an interest-free installment plan?
Enter 0. An interest-free plan is the same as a 0% fee rate, so the monthly payment is simply the purchase amount divided evenly by the number of months.
Does the installment fee rate vary by card?
Yes. The installment fee rate varies by card issuer, merchant, installment term, and any ongoing promotions. Enter the rate shown on your card statement or at checkout to see the estimated amount.
Is there a legal cap on installment fees, like there is for interest?
Installment fees are effectively a form of interest, so card issuers set them within the spirit of the maximum rate cap (20% per year) under the Interest Limitation Act. Check your card issuer's terms to confirm exactly how the cap applies.
Could this result differ from the actual amount charged by my card issuer?
Yes. Some card issuers allocate the installment fee differently by month, or recalculate it based on the remaining principal at each installment, which can cause small differences from the actual charged amount.
What happens to the fee if I cancel the installment plan early or switch to a lump-sum payment?
How the fee is settled for an early cancellation or a switch to lump-sum payment depends on the card issuer's and merchant's policy, and isn't reflected in this calculator. Contact your card issuer's customer service for the exact settlement amount.
This calculator assumes the installment fee rate you entered stays the same for the entire term, for reference only, and may differ from the actual amount charged by your card issuer. Please check with your card issuer for the exact amount.
